Celebrating my good fortune to be well and to have published, Dreams of Repair, (see July 13 post below) in the year I turned 70! The photo below was taken by Joanne Leonard, my identical twin sister who traveled to Boston to celebrate with me. Her book, Being in Pictures: An Intimate Photo Memoir is an extraordinarily beautiful book which we celebrated also.
I painted this birds-in-flight quadruptic (tryptic + one), in 1993 when the barn was a brown shingled structure with broken windows on the street-facing side. The windows were not easy to restore (each had several small panes missing and the frames were falling apart.) So the "birds- in- flight" mural was conceived and painted and here it has remained. When we renewed the barn (my husband David put up red-stained board and batten siding in 2007*), the faded, brown birds looked a little less vibrant than they once had and by 2009 their sad deterioration began to be an eyesore as the surface of the plywood peeled away.
All these years later, (1993-2010) I still think the flying birds are a dynamic idea I wanted to restore this "mural" but match the new colors of the barn better. Below you see some of the process of renewal. New boards were primed and painted white, a new stencil cut using remnants of the old one. ( I'm struck as I look at these pictures in side my studio how many instances of stencils there are in the various things hung on the walls. Over the years I have used stencils in many ways in my artwork. )
As you can probably tell, I'm not trying to create recognizable birds or accurate flight...but am satisfied with this metaphor for imagination taking flight.

In 2006 I traveled to Japan and interviewed the then 86 year old woman artist, Tomiyama Taeko in her studio in Tokyo. Now the interview can be read in a book published by the Center from Japanese Studies, University of Michigan Center for Japanese Studies, University of Michigan. The opportunity to publish with CHARTA is a milestone in my
own life as an artist. My work has
been exhibited extensively and has entered permanent collections including the
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Boston Public Library. My prints and watercolors are already
included in more than a dozen publications. However to date there has been no
book entirely devoted to my artwork published in sufficient quantities for wide
distribution nor with the imprimatur of a prestigious art publisher such as
CHARTA.
In this post I've included several samples of work that sponsors of "Dreams of Repair" may select from as "thank you" gifts for their contributions to this publication.
